Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.
A cheerful collection of popular design icons are displayed on this black obi. The Kikkou pattern spreads over most of the fabric: also called the Fortune Hexagon this much loved design signifies long life as it resembles the tortoise shell, and the tortoise was thought to live for one thousand years in previous Japanese eras. Within the kikkou are hanabishi, the diamond shaped floral emblem.
It is joined by Take, the symbol of the bamboo flower, that is known for it’s strength and flexibility, and Matsu, the hardy pine plant that symbolises strength and long life. The delicate Ume blossom is a favourite within Japan, it’s beauty and fragrance being reflected across art forms. it is the first blossom of the year to bloom, and represents endurance and good fortune.
This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan. It is approximately 40 years old, and in excellent condition.
