Our best selling clutch, hand made from vintage kimono: use as a stylish travel accessory, as it can accommodate a few passports, or a functional 'throw in and go' folding clutch to hold a few essentials on a night out.

A pretty collection of popular Japanese motifs cover this kimono fabric: ‘sakura’ blossoms and ‘kiku' with 'take' and ‘matsu’.

Sakura, the Cherry Blossom is one of the first of the year to bloom, and blooms for a relatively long time. It holds a special place in hearts of the Japanese: signifying new beginnings. These blossoms also represent the purity of life and patriotism. As the Sakura design is so loved, it is used on kimono worn throughout the year, not just during spring time.  Kiku, the chrysanthemum is the Flower of the Imperial House and and often used icon of Japan itself (it features on Japanese passports). It represents rejuvenation and longevity.

Take, bamboo known for it's strength, therefore the motif signifies strength of character.  Matsu, the pine tree is a hardy plant that symbolises strength and long life. Samurai often planted these trees: it was believed that the long needle-like leaves, Matsuba, protected them from demons. There are a number of different forms that the motif takes, from very angular to mushroom shaped similar to this design: these depict the tree in blossom.

The design sits on a chirimen silk fabric, a crepe like fabric with a textured finish.

This vintage kimono was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 20-30 years old.
